BYRON OPTIMIST ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT Saturday, April 15 at Boler Mountain Your Byron Optimist Sports Complex Some Background Information The facility is located at 618-678 Boler Road at Optimist Park Drive, and is fully operated and maintained by the Byron Optimist Sports Complex Inc. - a volunteer organization. The Complex originally occupied 19-acres of land which was donated to the Optimist Club of Byron by local developer Mr. Bill Willcock and was offi cially opened to the public in June 1979. At the opening, the Sports Complex contained 4 Baseball diamonds, 2 Soccer fi elds, an Equipment Storage Building including a Concession Booth which was operated by the Opti-Mrs. Club of Byron and ample parking for participants and spectators. Over the years there have been many changes. In 1982, Mr. Bill Willcock donated another 3 acres of land which was added to the existing parking lot which brings the complex up to 22 acres. Since the opening in 1979, other additions include a playground for the kids, plus additional out buildings to house the equipment needed to operate the facility. Today the facility offers 3 baseball diamonds and 3 soccer fi elds, with all but one fi eld being fl oodlit for night use. Many people do not realize that the Sports Complex is not owned by the City of London and that the Sports Complex must pay property taxes every year. The Complex is governed by a volunteer group of people and only the summer grounds keeper is a paid position. The cost to operate the Sports Complex is over $60,000.00 yearly and the Optimist Club of Byron is fi nancially responsible to make up any shortfalls which the Sports Complex may incur. We are proud that our Complex is home to some of the fi nest playing fi elds and safest playgrounds in the city. We are also proud that the Complex provides a place and be part of a team while learning baseball and soccer skills. If you have any questions, please email: sandy.mccallum@sympatico.ca
